Phlegrean Fields

The "burning" Campi Flegrei are located to the West of Naples along the coast between Posillipo and Cuma, and include the islands of Ischia and Procida. Since ancient times the Mediterranean people have considered the Campi Flegrei to be a mythical place, site of magical events and divinations. The district's productive soils are a result of volcanic activity from several craters, including Lake Avernus (Lago d'Averno), Solfatara, Agnano, and the most recent Monte Nuovo, an ash cone thrown up on 29 September 1538. The Camaldoli monastery is situated at the highest point (458 m/1,502 ft), with a commanding view across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius.
